SPEAKER_00

Welcome to the Five Arms and Lucky Ven podcast. I'm your host, Brent Brendan McCormick, with my co-host, David Soloway, aka he's for the people. The people are for him. And David, it is golf season in full swing, literally. And we are here to talk about the one of the best sporting events, the best sporting event in the PGA, the Masters. And the green jacket. So we're here to dive into some golf and some stats and provide value to our listeners and viewers. So David, is there any particular golfers that you think will win this year's Masters?

SPEAKER_01

I mean, you gotta start off with the man, right?

SPEAKER_00

You got to. I mean, Scotty Scheffler, you gotta, you gotta, you gotta bring him up first.

SPEAKER_01

Like you can't, I mean, the goat right now. He's already won this thing twice. Yeah. And it's he's been off and on. He won it, he didn't, he won it, he didn't. Is he gonna win it?

SPEAKER_00

I don't know. Maybe his new kid is gonna bring him some good luck.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's it's it's strange because he hasn't been playing that great to start off the year, but maybe you know, you got a a wife who's eight, nine months pregnant. Things are a little bit rocky at home, you know. You're trying to help out around the house a little bit more, you're not as dialed in.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe now that they have the kid, maybe he's back.

SPEAKER_00

I think I think he could be. He could be. I think he could be, David. I think he could be.

SPEAKER_01

But then I'm telling you what to get a two-time masters champion at plus 500.

SPEAKER_00

I was just thinking that, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I'm not gonna say it's free money because obviously there's a hundred guys in this tournament.

SPEAKER_00

It's yeah, I was about to say, I mean, come on.

SPEAKER_01

But that's really good odds, you know. Earlier this year, uh, before he was struggling, a lot of his tournament odds were plus 200. You can get this guy at plus 500, which is which is pretty crazy.

SPEAKER_00

Uh DraftKings had him at plus 495. Is that on FanDuel? The plus 500.

SPEAKER_01

It's I mean, it's plus 495.

SPEAKER_00

I was oh okay.

SPEAKER_01

I was just doing a little just doing a little simple rounding, rounding up, baby.

SPEAKER_00

Round it up, round those up. No, I like it. I like it. I just had to be, you know, accurate.

SPEAKER_01

I get it.

SPEAKER_00

You can be accurate for the people. Can't go against accuracy, can't go against accuracy, you know. But there's there's one golfer, David, that you know, it's kind of flying under the radar on DraftKings. He's plus 8,400 right now to win it all. It's uh Jacob Bridgman. Okay, yeah. He he won at Rivery Area, and he has not played, he's not placed worse than uh 18th in eight starts this year, but his chipping, David, it's a little it's a little it's a little bad, well a little bad. And you know how chipping is important on on the masters with these greens and how fast they are. So I think at plus eighty four hundred though, that that's that's a lot of value.

SPEAKER_01

Plus eighty four hundred is a ton of value for a guy that's been playing that well. And if you look at you know, the toughest course they played this year is is TBC Stargrass for the players, finished T5. So it's it's not like even in the big it's not like he's been dominating these lower level tournaments. You know, he I mean, like you said, he won the Genesis, which is also one of the more difficult courses they played this year, um, at Riviera. But yeah, that's a lot of value for him. I think I think the one drawback is this is this has to be his first masters, right?

SPEAKER_00

One would think so, but let's let's confirm. And as as you confirm, I'll I'll continue to talk about it.

SPEAKER_01

He has he has never played in the Masters, so yeah, that is not uh the best for him because obviously you need experience because uh Ludwig Oberg finished second just two years ago in his first start.

SPEAKER_00

I think I think it could go both ways.

SPEAKER_01

Uh no, I I do agree with you in general. You need yeah, you need the experience. That's why that's why Tiger can come back in 2019 and still perform. Yeah. Is because the experience of just being at Augusta year after year, you get to know the greens and and the the undulations on the greens, which are crazy. You get to know the the layouts of the holes. But you you get a guy who sometimes it's okay to not know what you don't know, you know what I'm saying? You get a guy who doesn't isn't intimately familiar with the course, so they're just out there kind of letting it loose instead of overthinking things because they're they've played it before.

SPEAKER_00

I'm I'm with you. I think there's I think there's some validity to that.

SPEAKER_01

I'm 100% on on Bridgeman here. I I will be betting this.

SPEAKER_00

Even if you bought five dollars, David.

SPEAKER_01

No, a hundred percent. I'm betting on him for that, and I'm also betting him top 20 because you can still get him top 20 at where's this guy at? Where's the bridgeman at? Come on, he's probably where you at Bridgeman. Oh, those odds aren't as good. What are the odds? Plus 182. I don't love that. That's not as good. Yeah, I'm probably just gonna bet him to win it.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I mean, still, even if you cash out early while he's doing hot, you still make yeah, 100%. I'm I will be putting a great return, yeah. I mean, a great return on that.

SPEAKER_01

That's a good call. That's a good call.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I mean, just trying to just try and bring value, David. That's what we do here at five.

SPEAKER_01

I got another value play.

SPEAKER_00

Okay, bring the value, bring the value, David.

SPEAKER_01

Jake Knapp. Jake Knapp has started off the year uh with what was that? Five top tens. He's also got a T11. He did miss the cut of the players, which that kind of scares me off of him a little bit. But Jake Knapp is currently the leader in strokes gained, the leader in scoring average, number one in par five scoring, which the par fives at Augusta are where you make the money. That's where you get your scoring at Augusta. That is where you get your scoring, and he's also top three in scrambling, which I think is very important at Augusta because we know that sometimes you can find yourself in a precarious situation where you know, Phil's shot, Bubba's shot when they're in the pine straw and they make those crazy shots. If Jake Knapp can can scramble his way out of those tough situations and just get up and down for pars here and there, and then take advantage of those par fives, I think he'd be a really good, really good sleeper pick here.

SPEAKER_00

I yeah, I I agree with you on that one. I just it does scare me that he missed missed a cut. I'm not gonna lie.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but some weeks you're just not gonna you're just not gonna have it, right? You can't have it every week, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

I can't have it every week. Yeah, I like that. Like that uh like that approach, David. I think they're you know, Rosie, Justin Rose missed out last year in a playoff, lost, lost to McElroy. Is this his get back year? Is this the year where he finally solidifies his first masters win? I hope so. I'm actually rooting hard for Rosie. I want him to finally get it. He's getting up there in age, he's 45. Like, there is no better time to win your first than right now. Like, he has to go after this one, he has to put everything into this.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, he's finished tied for second, or he's finished second three times, twice tied, and then last year, of course, uh the playoff. It it's a guy who knows the course. It's it's kind of like what we were talking about. He's played 20 times uh at the Masters most recently was in that playoff. Honestly, probably should have beat Rory with how terrible, terrible and great he played on that Sunday. What a round! But yeah, I mean, I don't I don't hate that. What what kind of odds do we got on uh Justin Rose?

SPEAKER_00

Uh the odds for Justin Rose plus 3500, yeah, plus 3500. I just I like some of these long ones, David, more than I do some of the close ones.

SPEAKER_01

Justin Rose has had a tough year, dude. Three missed cuts out of six starts. He did win the farmers at Tory Pines, otherwise, not great.

SPEAKER_00

Is DeShambo is DeShambeau on there in the top three just because of his name?

SPEAKER_01

I isn't he hot right now? I'm not a live guy.

SPEAKER_00

I'm not a live guy either. I'm not a live guy. It's hard. Let me get his won several tournaments at Live.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, he's hot this year. He won two tournaments in March. Most recently last week. So I don't know, it's tough because he had that that comment in like what was it, like 2020 or 2021, where he was like, Augusta's a par 67 for me because the par fives are really par fours.

SPEAKER_00

All right, he's he's he he's calmed that down.

SPEAKER_01

He's he has calmed that down, but I will never forget that to the point where I think that he still thinks that, and him thinking that makes me not want to bet on him to win or root for him because it's just douchebag attitude, honestly.

SPEAKER_00

I will say he's slaying the YouTube game, his YouTube videos are fun a lot. Yeah, he's good.

SPEAKER_01

I'm just I think he's great for the game of golf.

SPEAKER_00

I used to hate him, but yeah, I mean same. Same. If I had to pick one person to win it, though, one person to win it. I'd have to take Oberg. I would.

SPEAKER_01

You can't, you cannot be serious.

SPEAKER_00

I would. If I'm happy.

SPEAKER_01

This is gonna be my pick.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, are you serious? I thought you were being like, oh, it's a terrible pick.

SPEAKER_01

Oh I'm dead serious. That was my pick.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, I believe you by the way, you're actually. I just I mean, I'm biased because like obviously he went to Texas Tech, played golf at Texas Tech, but he's just fun to watch, and he's his his whole game is pretty complete. Sure. It's pretty complete, and there's very few times where he he he tries to blow leads, but there are times in certain rounds where he just shoots par consistently, which I mean, granted, there's nothing wrong with that, but you have to get birdies. You have to shoot.

SPEAKER_01

Last three tournaments, T3, T5, T5. He's hot right now.

SPEAKER_00

So I just I just think he's built for this moment. I would love to see Justin Rose, too. I think those are the two guys I'm rooting for the most.

SPEAKER_01

I will never root for Justin Rose.

SPEAKER_00

Why?

SPEAKER_01

Not a big English guy.

SPEAKER_00

No, not a big English guy, David said. Not a big English.

SPEAKER_01

We fought for our independence, man. We don't need to be rooting for them.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. Wow. Wow, David. Wow.

SPEAKER_01

You think in the year of America 250, we're gonna let a a Brit win the Masters? No chance.

SPEAKER_00

I'm rooting for him. He's he's tied too many times.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it does suck. It was kind of like uh what got a second too many times. Bill was the same way at the US Open. Yeah, he's gotten like he's got like five second places. Yeah, it sucks. It would be cool to see him win, but this year, no. No, I will be betting on him because the I agree with you, the odds, you know. Why not?

SPEAKER_00

David, you know, another thing that's always talked about is these uh lunch menu items that the Masters has each year. Yeah, you know, they have the champions dinner. Well, not even that. Uh the oh, you're talking about the you're talking about concessions, the egg salad sandwich and the pimento cheese, some of the legendary sandwiches that they offer. Are you more of an egg salad type of guy or pimento cheese? You think?

SPEAKER_01

I am not an egg salad type of guy, and I'm not from the south, so I've never had pimento cheese.

SPEAKER_00

Oh, dude. You gotta try, but it's not cheese.

SPEAKER_01

I have a problem with that. It's not cheese, not cheese, it's like a spread more than it is a cheese. It's not like a slice of cheese, you know.

SPEAKER_00

That's fair, that's fair.

SPEAKER_01

But hey, dude, for what are the pimento cheese? They're a buck fifty, buck fifty. I don't care if I like it or not, I'll crush seven of those. I mean for ten bucks.

SPEAKER_00

Inflation might be, you know, hurting our groceries, hurting our gas. But I tell you what, inflation is not hurting the price of what it takes to buy an egg salad and a pimento cheese sandwich from the masters, David. That's one thing that inflation's not hurting, and a beer there, six bucks.

SPEAKER_01

Six bucks that is unheard of.

SPEAKER_00

Well, what the amount of money you gotta pay to even get in there. I mean, six dollar beer. I would you know, I mean, I'm I'd be having a good time for a six dollar beer, but that that's all I'm gonna say.

SPEAKER_01

Have you heard of this peach ice cream sandwich? Three bucks. No, no, it's it's an ice cream sandwich with peach ice cream in the middle. Really? Sounds incredible on a hot day in Georgia in springtime. That sounds phenomenal.

SPEAKER_00

That does sound really good. That sounds amazing, actually. You know, man. Especially on a nice day in Georgia. You know, David, the famous 12th hole par three, known as the uh golden bell. What what do you think is the hole that's gonna cause the most havoc for these golfers this weekend coming up?

SPEAKER_01

Isn't it usually the 16th? Don't we have a lot of problems on the 16th at par three?

SPEAKER_00

Yes. Uh but the 12th is also pretty deadly.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, the 12th can be deadly, but it's it's more um it's the one with the the the weirdly shaped green. It's got it's kind of like a kidney bean on its side. Isn't that the 16th?

unknown

Oh shoot, dude.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know.

SPEAKER_01

Hold up, hold up. I I got you.

SPEAKER_00

Let's let's dive into this. Let's dive into this.

SPEAKER_01

No, it's the 12th, the 12th.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, yeah, that's what I thought. No, you just said, isn't that the 16th? Well, no, because you're right. No, you're right. You were right. I get those 16th. The 16th is the one, I believe, in the the one that has the really sharp green.

SPEAKER_01

The 12th is the one that causes the problems. You were correct on that. Yes, that's what I mean with the water, yes, yes, because it's got that, it's got that that really narrow green. Um, yeah, I mean, that's obviously that's obviously gonna be the key one, I think. But I like I was talking about earlier with with Jake Knapp, I think it's gonna come down to the par fives. It always comes down to the par fives.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, you gotta get birdies when you can.

SPEAKER_01

You gotta get birdies, you gotta maybe throw an eagle or two in there.

SPEAKER_00

Talking about eggs now. We're talking about eagles. Dang, man.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, that one hole, I'm not gonna I don't know the the the number of the hole, but there's that one par five where you gotta go over the creek, and the guys who can get there in two and have a chance at the eagle, those are the guys who have the best chance of winning.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah. No, you're you're definitely right. I'm trying to find out the weather um circumstance for the for the masters. Um it does rain quite a bit for those of you that don't know during the during the masters, but the outlook for Augusta is according to weather.com, so don't shoot me. Thursday at 72.

SPEAKER_01

Dude, we've had a great a great weekend of weather.

SPEAKER_00

I know that's what I was saying. Like, that's what I was getting to. Friday's 78, Saturday's 84, Sunday's 85. So it doesn't look like there's gonna be any rain or any major winds, great golfing weather overall. So I don't see that really impacting the field at all. So that's really exciting to to hear that.

SPEAKER_01

Definitely. I I hate throwing the masters on on Thursday or Friday during work. Sucks, man. And there's a there's a rain delay. I don't want that. I don't want that at all. Another thing, the rain, the rain with this course always kind of makes the greens a bit easier because it slows them down. I want to see this course operating with fast greens, make it challenging for these guys, and for that reason, my favorite bet of the week is the winning score over 274 and a half.

SPEAKER_00

Hmm. Over 274 and a half, huh?

SPEAKER_01

So that'd be 14 under or yes, worse. I actually like that. The last two winners. Let's see. I just had this up. Where are the winners?

SPEAKER_00

No, I can I had it up too.

SPEAKER_01

It's um it is oh yeah, Scotty 11 under Ron 12, Scotty 10, Hideki 10, Dustin Johnson was 20 under, but that was the fall master.

SPEAKER_00

Even was got 13, man.

SPEAKER_01

Uh yeah, the the years before that, tiger 13, which still falls in that number. We need uh Patrick Reed 15, and then you had years nine, five, eight, nine, ten. So I really, really love over 274 and a half.

SPEAKER_00

Man, bring in value. I love it. There's a little juice on it, minus 138, but yeah, I I do think that that is a winning bet as well. Man, I'm so excited for the masters every year. It's just one of those events that I really look forward to, and honestly, I have the best naps of my life. Saturday afternoon, masters in the background, and I'm just just just gone in another area, code.

SPEAKER_01

So another great thing about the masters is it it just signals the nice weather's here, even if it's raining in Georgia, it just signals spring is here. We we have turned the corner, we are on our way to the warm temperatures. I mean, you live in warmth all the time, so oh, yeah, that's wonderful in Texas. Yeah, it's 30 here today, it's actually currently like 24 degrees. So the masters, it's gonna be 80 on Sunday. So we're okay, we're we're turning the corner, and that's why the masters signifies to me that spring is here.

SPEAKER_00

That's right. Azaleas.

SPEAKER_01

I got some Azaleas right out there. Oh, that's what I'm talking about that just started blooming right for the masters, and then they're gonna go away right after.

SPEAKER_00

I just can't wait to experience it in real life. Oh, you're gonna go one time, one of these days.

SPEAKER_01

Have you entered the lottery?

SPEAKER_00

Oh, yeah. I mean, I'm just gonna buy my like you know, you can pick winner. You literally can't. No, you can't. You literally can.

SPEAKER_01

No, you can't, yeah.

SPEAKER_00

You can.

SPEAKER_01

They don't allow secondary markets.

SPEAKER_00

I mean, you want me to look up tick pic right now and show you? There's no chance, they're fake, dude. They're not fake. I promise you they're not fake.

SPEAKER_01

No, Augusta National strictly prohibits the resale of masters tickets, making all secondary market sales technically unauthorized.

SPEAKER_00

Technically.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. If they get wind that they're sold on there, you buy them and you'd go to you go to scan your ticket at the gate and there's they're like, sorry, this ain't real.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know. I trust tick pic because they have a hundred percent buyer trust guarantee.

SPEAKER_01

You trust over the masters. The masters is the is the most well-run sporting event in the history of sporting events.

SPEAKER_00

I'm just I'm just letting you know. Like they're on tick pic. Like, I I I trust, I trust tick pic. Even if it's fake, David, I'll get refunded. 100% buyer back guarantee.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I mean, I guess that's fair. You travel all the way to Georgia, they're not refunding that money.

SPEAKER_00

That's fine. I'm still in the presence of the turn.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, yeah, standing outside the gate. Wow, that sounds like a hell of a time.

SPEAKER_00

Hey, man. Hey. So even if it's through Tic Pic. Not a sponsor. But hey, let's make that happen. Love to make that happen, Tic Pic.

SPEAKER_01

How do you feel about uh hole in ones? That's always a fun bet for golf tournaments. Usually it's will there be a hole in one? Yes or no? I think there will be. This one, DraftKings doesn't even offer yes or no. Oh I just didn't see that. I was about to say I was gonna say two. The only option was two or more. That's insane. Yeah, uh, yes, minus 162. Yeah, I think there was gonna be some, and I think you bet it just to have fun. You're rooting for a hole in one the whole time. I mean, you see the ball rolling toward the hole. You already love to see a hole in one on the TV coverage, yeah, but then you also win a little bit of money and root for it. Yeah, you got that.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, who doesn't love that? You ever have a hole in one? No, I've maybe had one legit birdie golfing career.

SPEAKER_01

Man, hey man, that new putter is gonna change that.

SPEAKER_00

Hey, the lab DF3, David. The lab DF3. I believe in it, I'm gonna trust it, and then I have my X10 new driver right now. It is cranking, it's cranking 260, 270. Yeah, man consistently. I have it's the lightest shaft I've ever felt.

SPEAKER_01

I have full faith that you're suddenly gonna be good at golf.

SPEAKER_00

I I'm I would love to put a money match on. So I want to beat you straight up one of these days.

SPEAKER_01

I'm here, man. No, you won't. No chance.

SPEAKER_00

I'm gonna beat you straight up.

SPEAKER_01

You know why I know you won't beat me? You might even if you get better at golf than me.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I will get in your head.

SPEAKER_01

I will get in your head so fast you won't be able to handle it.

SPEAKER_00

I'm too good. All right. All right, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I'll see you next year on the course.

SPEAKER_00

Oh yeah, we'll we'll be doing it. We'll be doing it, you know. March Madness a little bit before we'll be golfing. Put them on the map shown. Yeah, take my money like you normally do. But that's it's fine. It's fine. I feel great about it when you bring it back to me after, you know, I make a crazy football bet. But, anyways, um, for those of you that don't know, I bet Carl or I bet Tarleton to beat Army, and Tarleton did beat Army.

SPEAKER_01

So no, you even you didn't even bet them like moneyline with me. You took you I gave you points. No, I gave you points. You did, yeah. I gave you like six and a half points, and I said I will double the money. That was the dumbest bet I've ever made. Why did I do that? I don't know.

SPEAKER_00

You'll learn, yeah, you know, you live and learn, David. Yeah, I guess so.

SPEAKER_01

I'll just beat you on the golf course next time.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, that's fine. But, anyways, appreciate you guys tuning in, listening to our master's tea off edition. We're excited for it to start off. And like we both discussed, we're both on Ludwig Oberg to win and a hole in one to happen, but don't over 274 and a half. And don't forget about our but about our guy Bridgman plus 8400. That is that is a nice, that is a nice bet to make. Just saying it could happen. Never know. It's first master. There's some things you don't know, but maybe that's the benefit to him. So that's all I'm gonna say. Go to our go to our Instagram 511 podcast and TikTok 5LF Podcast. And X give us a follow. We always appreciate your support, tuning in, listening.
