Welcome to the Five Arms and Lucky Finn podcast. I am your host, Brendan McCormick, with my co-host David Stalloway, aka he's for the people. The people are for him. David, what's happening? Are those youngins kicking your ass?
SPEAKER_01Oh, the youngins are kicking my ass, man.
SPEAKER_02Being a coach is something else. I bet it's electric in some ways or different ways, if you know what I mean.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I don't think electric's the word. It's uh it's a headache, is what it is.
SPEAKER_02A headache?
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, dude. Wrangling a bunch of seven-year-olds.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. No, it's not good. It's not like babysitting, though, right? Like you're trying to, you know, teach them something.
SPEAKER_01I mean, yeah, but they don't want to be taught.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's true. That's true. True. You gotta teach them, you know, the love of the game, David. You gotta teach them the love of the game. Yeah, they don't care about the game, dude. Yeah, they just don't care about screen time and iPads and that's right. Roblox and things like that, you know. That's right. Yeah. Well, you know, David, there's some things happening in the sports world. You know, we got the transport portal opening up, we got NBA playoffs, NHL playoffs, which has had the masters, you know. Even though it's kind of the dead season in sports, a lot of things are happening.
SPEAKER_01A lot of things are happening still. Yeah, I would say this is a dead season for us, guys like us. Yeah, because we're not massively into pro sports. I'm I'm big in the MLB, but even that, it's like it's the beginning of the season, so you know, you can't be that invested yet, right? So this is kind of our our dead period, but we're still here for the people, man.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, gotta be here for the people, listeners and viewers. You know, we can't can't just back down, you know. We've got to keep the content flowing. That's right. So definitely, uh, David, yeah, let's let's dive into these NBA playoffs. NBA playoffs, you know, we have 41-year-old LeBron James leading the Lakers, you know, David, because of injuries. There's a lot of injuries happening right now in the NBA. If you don't know, David, if you don't know, can a 41-year-old LeBron James without Austin Reeves and Luka Doncic win a playoff series?
SPEAKER_01Can he? Absolutely, yes. He's okay, he's not the same guy that he was five, 10 years ago, but he's still a top 10 to 15 player in the NBA. When he plays, yeah, he doesn't play as often. Yeah, statistically. I mean, that that's dude. NBA guys love statistics. Oh, NBA guys love to cite statistics. Jordan guys, especially, love statistics, dude. It's crazy how much they love statistics. But I don't think he can in this scenario because he's he's just got those other two guys out. Yeah, it's hard in a playoff series to win without any depth. Um, because it's it's one thing to lose, you know, two of your top three scores. It's another thing, you know, that hurts the whole team. Now you don't have as much depth depth off the bench. And you got a 41-year-old leading your team, and you know, let's say this goes seven. He's gonna be drained by game seven. So I don't love their odds, but the Rockets are a young team, other than um, you know, the old guy. Kant. Yeah, yeah. Um, but they're still a young team, and KD's kind of old, so maybe he'll bring them up to speed and they'll get a playoff series win. But um, because they they were they were seeded a lot higher last year, right? I think they were two-seed in the West last year, but they were really, really young, and everybody was saying, even though they're the two-seed, they gotta prove it because just because you're young doesn't mean that you have the experience to actually win in the playoffs because the playoffs are a different game, and then they didn't, but maybe this year it'll be different.
SPEAKER_02No, I mean it might be, but I don't.
SPEAKER_01I'm not saying they're gonna win the the championship, but they the Rockets should beat the Lakers here, yeah. I mean, come on, Rockets are favorite on the road in game one, yeah.
SPEAKER_02I mean, it's the Lakers are also without Fred Van Fred Van Fliet and Steven Adams as well. Who's even playing for them? Great question. Who is who is healthy on this roster? You know, you gotta probably dig deep to find who is going to play on those, but let's dive into that. Who do they got on their dude?
SPEAKER_01Dude, this starting lineup is insane. Okay, Luke Kennard is their point guard. No, yeah, they're back at point guard. Marcus Smart's their starting shooting guard, so I guess he would probably be the back at point guard. But the next guy in line is Bronny.
SPEAKER_02Hey, hey, you know, he needs to learn, he needs that, you know, that experience, that player to do what he's gonna be out of the league once LeBron's out of the league.
SPEAKER_01Come on.
SPEAKER_02No, it's nepotism, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, when LeBron's not in the league anymore, no one's gonna need to keep him on their team. Anyway, Luke Kennard, Marcus Smart, Jake La Ravia, LeBron James, DeAndre Aiden.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's a bunch of old geezers. Yeah, they're really really gonna do something, David. Jake LaRavia, Indiana State. And also Lord Central, Indiana. Hey, shout out. Always gotta talk about the Indiana folks. Let me let me love me some Indiana folks. Love me some Indian folks. Another, another, you know, surprise matchup, you know, David, is always, you know, the four the four and five and the three and six matchups in the opening round. So, you know, the other three and six matchup on the West, we got the Nuggets and the Wolves, T Wolves, you know, looks like Aaron Gordon was out when they originally played in the regular season. Jokic is averaging 36, 15, and 11 against Minnesota while shooting 65 percent from the field. Yeah, the Nuggets are gonna dominate the Wolves there, in my opinion. I don't I I they could sweep them. I mean, Nuggets are I love Jokic, he's fun to watch. He's like a bully ball.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, first player ever to lead the league in rebounds and assists in the same year. There you go. Average the triple-double, the guy's just an electric factory.
SPEAKER_02I love these European basketball players, they're great.
SPEAKER_01Don't say that.
SPEAKER_02No, I really do. You're going somewhere. Okay, I am going somewhere. Give me give me a moment. All right, when when is the American basketball players gonna rise again?
SPEAKER_01Thank you. Thank you. This you know, this is the most important question coming out of the NBA right now. I'm serious. Every top guy in the NBA MVP conversation is foreign. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Luka, yep, Giannis kind of fell off a little bit this year, injured, bad team, yeah, but still, yeah, Jokic, um uh Shea Gilder's Alexander Canadian, Canadian, Wemby, French, French. The good thing for us is that all of those guys are from different countries. So when the Olympics come around, we can still dominate. But if you did USA versus like if they were to play an actual game, not an exhibition all-star game that's all BS, an actual game of the best USA players right now versus the best world players right now, we would get absolutely waxed.
SPEAKER_02Who would you say is the best American basketball player right now? That's a tough question. Um, it's a loaded question. I gotta go with my man Steph Curry. Yeah, he's old. Oh, he's old, but I mean he's old, but I guess Anthony Edwards, maybe Anthony Edwards, Jason Tatum went healthy, healthy, but he's coming off a bigger.
SPEAKER_01We don't even know what of course. Uh Kate Cunningham had a great year. Oh, I love my boy Kate. Yeah, yeah, like he he's probably up there right now. Donovan Mitchell's probably still up there.
SPEAKER_02I'm not a big fan of his game.
SPEAKER_01No, I'm not either, and that's why the channels are they they never go anywhere in the playoffs, but yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um great regular season team, you know. It's like the Hawks team. Absolutely, yeah. Those Hawks teams, but then here comes LeBron.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, dude. That's tough. Every year, they were so good. That starting five was insane. Yeah, but they never could do anything. No, they got swept, I think, one year. Probably, yeah. Josh Smith, that dude was a dog. He really was. He was built like a tight end, though. Yeah, he was. He probably could have been a tight end, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Probably, probably, yeah. Had a lot of good teams, had a lot of good teams, but you know, let's look at the Eastern Conference a little bit. We talked about the cat Cavs with Donovan Mitchell, but before I get into that, I do think Seth Curry is the best American basketball player. Dude shoots threes wherever he wants, and he can still move without the ball. His team's not the same. I mean, if he has a little bit of us better supporting help, I think the Warriors are better than the eight seed if he gets some young young talent in there, which they're trying to do.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, technically they're the 10th seed too. The play-ins the playing tournament, they can get the eight. Um, yeah, no, I'm with you. He's probably still top dog, yeah. But aging out, you know. Yeah, I mean you could put KD in the conversation too for best USA player.
SPEAKER_02You can. I mean, he's a raw scorer, he just scores at will, but I just dude.
SPEAKER_01I'd I'd still probably take mellow. If we're putting a team together, give me mellow. What? Yeah, give me mellow, dude. That is that dude that dude could still knock down a 17-footer easy. I need video proof because I don't think so. He's old. Come on, what do you mean he's old? He's the same age as Lebron.
SPEAKER_02That's old. He's pretty old, isn't it? Yeah, it's 41. LeBron's a freak, he's in a hyperbolic chamber and shit.
SPEAKER_01Good point. Good point.
SPEAKER_02You know what I mean? That dude doesn't age.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, good point.
SPEAKER_02He's golfing when Bob does sports, you know. Like it's just it's a new age for him. Yeah, you're not wrong. You know, what would be really cool if he created a YouTube channel with Brawny? Hope he I hope he does that. That sounds awful.
SPEAKER_01Sounds great. Sounds great for the people. I would watch exactly zero of those videos. I'd watch some of it. I love LeBron, the athlete. He is the fakest dude of all time. And I you will not find a bigger braun guy than me. You know that you know I'm a Braun guy. Man, dissing the man. I'm not dissing him. You dissing the man, dude. He's got he's so fake. He's always he's always thinking about those studio, he was like on a curse record.
SPEAKER_02He just was cursing, yeah. Well, not that I heard it. I heard it was good. It was good. You need to watch it. It was actually listening to the viewers. You need to watch it.
SPEAKER_01Zero chance.
SPEAKER_02You don't like YouTube golf?
SPEAKER_01Uh, no, I actually don't like most of them.
SPEAKER_02Wow, like a Grant Horvath.
SPEAKER_01You like Grant Horvath? There's there's a zero percent chance I would ever watch him play golf. He's way too good. If I'm gonna watch YouTube golf, I want to watch guys who suck like me. That's why Bob Does Sports is actually kind of up my alley. I mean, they're the best YouTube channel right now.
SPEAKER_02I'm addicted. I'm addicted. Joey Coldcuts is is absolutely terrible. That guy, I can't handle him. I can't wait. I could beat him, I could beat him on a one-on-one match. I'm beating up.
SPEAKER_01You couldn't beat anybody, dude.
SPEAKER_02Come on, come on now. Come on now. Yeah, come on. You gotta give me some credit. No, no credit. Uh you beat me twice, that's fair. With money online. You steal you steal money from me. Yeah, steal. Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_01You don't know how to play golf. That's tough.
SPEAKER_02I mean, I got a child. What do you want me to do? So do I. I have three of them. You got a few more than me. Yeah, you know, I'm trying to try to get back on the course, dude. Trying to improve my game. Yeah, I feel you. Yeah. You know, in this.
SPEAKER_01I got a question for you about the raptors. All right. Name one guy.
SPEAKER_02Oh. Um. Kansas guy, Blondie.
SPEAKER_00Wow, that's the one you went with. Yeah, that's the one I went with.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that's awesome. What's his name? Oh man, shoot threes, knock down a shooter.
SPEAKER_01Grady Dick.
SPEAKER_02Yes, the dick. The dick. Yes. I was like, he had a very memorable name. But yeah, I know. Be on top of my head. I will be uh TJ D.
SPEAKER_01TJD's there.
SPEAKER_02Oh man. Man, I knew that because I saw the graphic. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And then they're there, like actually good players of um Brendan.
SPEAKER_02I love Trace Jackson.
SPEAKER_01RJ Barrett and Scotty Barnes.
SPEAKER_02Wow. There's a lot of trading in the NBA nowadays, huh? I guess so. Can't even keep up. They're on one team and then go on the next and in three months. Man.
SPEAKER_01TJ D does not play, but I would love for him to get some minutes in this in this playoffs. I mean, just just who's their coach? Just call him up. He averages like five minutes a game. So maybe, maybe we'll see him if they don't shorten the rotation. I believe he has.
SPEAKER_02No, I don't think he has eligibility. He could come back. He definitely has eligibility. A year?
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Bring it. Bring it on. One of his years was COVID. That's what I thought. I thought he I thought it was with COVID. Bring him back. Just do it. Other players are doing it. Why not? What do you gotta lose?
SPEAKER_01That'd be pretty sick.
SPEAKER_02That'd be crazy.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Can you imagine a 6-11 Alabama kid and then you know the 7-2 SMU kid with Trace?
SPEAKER_01That'd be definitely that we're back to Woody Ball. That's too many bigs. We're talking too much Indiana basketball. Anyways, yeah, let's go on to the next one.
SPEAKER_02Uh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Back back on track, back on track. All right, you know, uh Celtics and Sixers, David. You know, obviously Tatum, you know, coming back from that injury. You got Brown doing his thing. I I embied, you know, is still you know, DMP, you know, DNP he doesn't decide to play. I yeah, big injury guy. But that yeah, that's not gonna be much of a series. Uh let's roll down. You know, the pistons get the magic or the hornets. That's not much of a series. You know, pistons are probably gonna sweep them.
SPEAKER_01Though the hornets are kind of fun, though. Hornets are fun. Did you watch the you probably didn't watch their playing game the other night? There's no chance you watched it. I know there was a buzzer beater. It was very fun. Okay, it was awesome.
SPEAKER_02Very fun.
SPEAKER_01We like fun Kobe White, Lamella Ball, Con Knipple, Brandon Miller. A bunch of big names that you would know from college, and then Lamella Ball. That might be nipple set the record for most threes in the season. My boy, that's he know we got that by a rookie, maybe overall.
SPEAKER_02White boys got some motion.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, dude. You know, yeah. Uh got a question for you. Yeah, name a piston who's not Kate Cunningham.
SPEAKER_02Jade Nivey.
SPEAKER_01No, dude.
SPEAKER_02He I'm messing. I'm messing. I'm messing with it. He's not even in the league anymore. No, I know. I'm messing. Um, give me a second. Give me a second. Give me a second. Let the brain process, dude. Let the brain process here.
SPEAKER_01There's only one of these guys you could possibly get because he's getting in fights all the time. Otherwise, no chance.
SPEAKER_02You know, oh, I got one. Duncan Robinson. Duncan Robinson is one, yes. Yep. Uh, let's go to Bias Harris. You're looking at a roster. Paris Lavert.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Isaiah Stewart is the one I was thinking you possibly could get because there's just clips of him fighting people all the time.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but I mean, I'll be hand up. I don't know much of these players, you know. Not not much of a homer when it comes to NBA, you know, teams. And but I need we need to get back into it, you know. We gotta get our I'm getting into these playoffs, dude.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna be watching the shit out of these playoffs. Yeah, I mean, got to, right? I mean except for when the game I'm gonna watch the early games, I'm not gonna watch the late games.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I don't know. You know, since we're older nowadays, you know, we like our sleep. I don't know if that's worth losing sleep, in my opinion.
SPEAKER_01No, I'm gonna have to find some YouTube channel that does like next morning.
SPEAKER_02You know, I sent you an article too, David, that said uh NBA viewership was at 85%. That's a staggering number.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it is, and I made a great point about it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you did. Do you want to dive into that?
SPEAKER_01You want to because this figure was based solely off of national TV games, yeah. The 86% was otherwise, I think it was up 24% overall, which still great. I'll give them that. Great, right? Happy for them, yeah. But the 86% increase was due to games going from TNT, which is a cable network, where you have to have cable, and there's still a lot of people in this country who don't have cable. Yeah, they went to NBC this year, where games are actually if you just have an antenna, you can watch them on NBC. So they're gonna get higher viewer numbers just based on that. And old people, old people just leave the channel on NBC or CBS or ABC. They like they just leave it on and watch whatever's on. So I think that was a a bit uh skewed just because of the NBC deal, but hey, still good for them. Numbers went up. Hey, numbers are up climbing. Yeah, I got a question for you about TV in the NBA. Okay in previous years, some of the less high profile series in the first round would be broadcast on their like local network. Okay, like um for for like if the Pacers were in the first round, it'd be on whatever they're on. I think they're on FanDuel now, but like Bally Sports when it was Bally Sports.
SPEAKER_02Oh, Bally Sports, man. Bally sports sports.
SPEAKER_01So they did away with that this year. Now every game is on a national network. What do you think about taking those games away from the regional networks? Good or bad.
SPEAKER_02If you're getting if you're trying to get more viewership, I would say that it's bad. If you're trying to take it away from the regional networks. Leave it with the regional networks because here's the thing the reason why I've noticed even NBA games are on is because they're on MBC now. Or whatever whatever public, you know, major channel it's on. What channel is it on?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean NBC, ABC, yeah, Prime. I think those are the big ones.
SPEAKER_02I mean, yeah, and I have all those, and everyone has a Prime membership because everyone uses Amazon Prime, so they get that in a prime membership. So I think I don't see it as a bad thing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, I'm with you. I think if they're trying to drive viewership numbers, they gotta get them off the regional networks because the regional networks are. I mean, like for example, Celtics Sixers, and I I used to live around uh Philadelphia. So I remember when first round sixers games were on NBC Sports Philadelphia. Yeah, like if you live anywhere else in the country, you can't watch the game. I flip-flop my answer, but you know, I know I know you did, I knew what you meant.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um you couldn't watch the game if you didn't live in Philly. So I guess if you had NBA dot TV or League Pass or whatever the hell they're calling it these days, um, but yeah, I'm with you. I think I think getting viewership numbers up, like yeah, no one cares about the Spurs and the Trailblazers. The Spurs are gonna wipe the floor with them, but if you want to watch it, now you have the ability to.
SPEAKER_02Can I be completely honest? The first round the NBA playoffs are like completely useless. Completely use. Alright, then I have a question for you. What about the NBA is useful? That is a great question. That is a great question.
SPEAKER_01Because most years, even the champion, you have a really good idea of who it's going to be heading into the playoffs.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, this year it's gonna be the Thunder.
SPEAKER_01They're gonna like the pit. I'm sorry, but the Pistons as the one seed in the East are not winning it.
SPEAKER_02No, like it's and it's you know, it's that in my opinion, it's kind of that way for college basketball. Well, right, you have the top five teams, and then usually the one team that's kind of two and a three seed in the final four this year, they had a chance to win in that game until the end.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but it wasn't like uh we've had a seven seed win it before, they've never had a seven seed. We've had a nine or not nine, yeah, nine Villanova in 85. I guess that was a long time ago. But yeah, Butler was a lower seed when they went to the championship game. Like you get these Cinderella stories, but right now the finals winner odds on um DraftKings, Thunder, plus 110. Yeah, that's basically saying, you know, even odds, they're gonna win.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I mean, that's that's insane.
SPEAKER_01And and your one seed in the east is the Pistons, they are plus 2200. No chance.
SPEAKER_02Dang.
SPEAKER_01I might take that though.
SPEAKER_00What if they just get hot? There's a one seed, right? Like, come on. They could get hot.
SPEAKER_02I don't know. I just this is why like I love analytics and betting and things like that, right? I mean, we both sports bet, like but it's just at times it kind of takes away from like the thrill of like when we were younger, right? Because we couldn't we didn't know anything about analytics, and like I know that's part of getting older and things like that, but David, the highest seed that has won an NBA championship were the Houston Rockets in 1995 with he Hakeem Elijah one. That was a long time ago.
SPEAKER_01What what seed was what seed were they?
SPEAKER_02The si the sixth seed.
SPEAKER_01Okay, I mean, but like what have the past few years been?
SPEAKER_02I mean, the I shouldn't know this, but the Thunder won last year, the year before that, it was the Nuggets, right? And then no, it was the Celtics, Celtics, and then it was the Nuggets the year before that.
SPEAKER_01I got it, I got it. I got the the list here. Yeah, so I'm just gonna go. I'll I guess I'll just I'll read them. Thunder one Celtics one Nuggets one, yeah, Warriors three, Bucks three. But that's still a high seed.
SPEAKER_02No, I agree. What's the point of the first turn?
SPEAKER_01Um, let's see if there's anything below a three. I mean, yeah, the Rockets are the last one, dude. Uh, there's been a few threes, which is I mean, great, but yeah, a three like the two three matchup in the second round is basically a coin flip. Yeah, and then you know, they obviously have to beat the one seed from there, but still, that's a damn good team.
SPEAKER_02What were the Spurs when they went on their little run?
SPEAKER_01Uh, in 07 when they beat when they swept the early LeBron Cavs, they were a three. Uh five, they were a two, oh three, they were a one. Interesting. And then they won again in 2014, they were a one.
SPEAKER_02That's really interesting.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it sucks because it looked it looked like for a few years there it was going to open back up, yeah. Um, to where you would have a bunch of teams that could possibly win it, like that Suns Bucks uh finals. Didn't we didn't think that those were gonna be the two teams?
SPEAKER_02That was a great series. I remember walking out with Jason in our old apartment.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely was it was a great series. Um, but yeah, it's gotten back to just the one seed to win it every year. Remember the Heat were in it a couple years ago as an eight-seed, though. Remember that?
SPEAKER_02That is true. That is true. They did go on that crazy run. Yeah, Nuggets kind of got an easy path there. Yeah, they they did. They they definitely did. They definitely did. Let's talk a little bit about these NHAP NHL playoffs, David. Let's let's let's rush on this real quick. Um, you know, the Utah Mammoths, not the Macedon, the mammoths made the singular mammoth, one mammoth. One mammoth, yeah, made their that made their playoff appearance in their second season. That's crazy.
SPEAKER_01Well, I mean, they're not an expansion franchise.
SPEAKER_02I believe they are, aren't they?
SPEAKER_01No, they're not. They're the coyotes.
SPEAKER_02Ah, the coyotes.
SPEAKER_01That's they re they relocated.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they relocated. Good old good old Utah, you know. You know. But I mean, looking at the bracket, you know, you got the Sabres, the Bruins, and the Eastern Conference, you know, Avalanche, Stars.
SPEAKER_01You know, hell yeah, dude. You're just naming hockey teams. Yeah, I mean, we obviously don't know shit about this. And yeah, the bracket's not front about that. First of all, it's mostly set. I mean, not all of it, but yeah, like two seeds, two seeds are still up for grabs, I think. Yeah, um, I who's your pick? Just make a pick and name one player from that team.
SPEAKER_02Okay, okay. Let's do that. I like that. That is a new new approach, David. A new approach. You know, I'm gonna go with the Dallas Stars, and they're facing one of the crucial injuries off Myro Heskinen. And uh, you know, don't know if that's how you don't know how that's how you say it, but you know, there's a lot of different Canadian twangs. We gotta intro inter, you know, intertwine here, and you know, a lot of European names as well, because Russians Miro Heskinen or whatever you said, is not Canadian.
SPEAKER_01How do you say it then? I don't even know who you're talking about, dude.
SPEAKER_02He's uh he's a prime defenseman, a prime defenseman, I am told, which may impact their playoff run against the Colorado Abbott. Dude, what's that? Miro Heiskinen, yes, yeah, dude. That's the Finnish superstar, and then they also have the wild, they always play the wild in the first round for some reason. The stars do, so you know, rematch of that from last season. I'm pretty sure they played each other in their first round last season. Almost positive.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I they do a weird like regional matchups thing, it's not based on record or points.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's kind of I mean it is kind of, but they they do it regionally, but you know, I love a man that just hits another man on the ice, and you know, I'm trying to get more into hockey, you know, listener viewers. I'm trying to broaden my horizon. You know, I'm more of a college football, college basketball, slightly NFL guy and a big golf guy. Love talking to PGA, big PGA guy here. But yeah, trying to trying to brush brush up. You got anything on this? Who's your winner? And name one one player from that team, David.
SPEAKER_01Uh my winner. Oh, shoot. My winner is the Colorado Avalanche because they have the best odds right now. And I I appreciate a good sports book.
