SPEAKER_02

Welcome to the Five Arms and Lucky Finn podcast. I'm your host, Brigham Cormack, with my co-host, David Soloway. AK he is for the people. The people are for him. AKA Big Diesel as well. Indiana football made program history, David. We did. Eight players drafted. This is the NFL draft results and spring game results of the Hoosier Homer Hour by Five Arms and a Lucky Finn. And David, I could talk about last year's team forever. But there is one thing out of that draft that really, really shocked me of Elijah Sorat going to all the way down to round four to the Ravens. I thought that was an absolute steal for them.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, there was a run on receivers in like the second and third round of all these names. You know, a lot of guys you know, uh Chris Brazzle from Tennessee, big body, you the the type of guy you want to see in the NFL, but you just don't get the same production you get with a guy like that that you do with Surratt and he's just he's the guy. And yeah, he there's a reason he's named his nickname is Waffle House. I mean, come on now. And the Ravens are always looking for weapons, so I think this will be a great opportunity for him to see the field early, even though he did go in fourth round.

SPEAKER_02

I do, I do love our guy Omar Cooper, but Eliza Surratt dropping all the way down to the fourth round actually just kind of shook me. And you know, David, he had 15 touchdowns last season, receiving touchdowns. I believe that was either first in the NCA or tied for first, if I remember right, when the draft, you know, graphics showed. But still, man, that's just crazy to me. He fell that that far.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I mean, it it isn't it amazing how they basically had similar production last year. Surat missed a couple games, um which which kind of made his stats look maybe a little worse than they otherwise would have. But the difference between them is is three rounds basically, and it's all based on measurables. Surratt's not the fastest guy, yeah. But that's that's why I don't understand drafting because it's it's always off of potential. And with him, you got a guy who you can plug and play right now. He's not gonna be Julio Jones, he's not gonna be AJ Brown, but he could be a solid number three, split him out wide, throw a couple back shoulder fades a couple times a game. He's gonna catch the ball. You know he's gonna catch the ball, he does not drop the ball.

SPEAKER_02

No, he doesn't drop the ball.

SPEAKER_01

You know, Nick Westbrook has carved out a really nice NFL career, which is wild. He was great at Indiana, but still it was during an era where we didn't expect a guy like him to actually have a real NFL career. That is a great comparison, actually. And and he's I think he's very similar, Surratt is in that he's not flashy, but he's a good route runner, he's gonna catch the ball. Yeah, he's probably gonna play special teams and he's gonna be pretty solid at it too. I I just I think he's he's gonna have a long career, and he's he's gonna be a solid number three for a long time. I I agree with you, I agree with you.

SPEAKER_02

I think he could sneak even in that wide receiver too eventually. I think there's a lot of potential that he has, but I I do see him in his first couple years being that that strong wide receiver three ones.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, especially in Baltimore. In Baltimore, he could be the number one.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that I that's what I mean.

SPEAKER_01

Like, he's he's probably not the type of guy you want to be your number one, but he could be their number one just based on you know, they don't have they haven't had them the most, and part of that is their quarterback, but they just they haven't had the most electric receiving core.

SPEAKER_02

No, and they've they've tried to pick up some you know veterans alongside to help Lamar, but still I think that's one area the Ravens definitely struggle as long as as long as my Colts do too, you know, David. They I was shocked that they did not draft that that man, Eliza Surratt.

SPEAKER_01

But you know, I wish teams would, and I know this is probably a bad strategy, but I wish teams would draft hometown guys more, especially guys like that, who are such a huge name, yeah, in the state, around you know, football in the state.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And they just they just kept passing over him.

SPEAKER_02

They did. They did.

SPEAKER_01

They passed over Ponds at one point, too, right? I think they passed over him with their with their first pick, which would have been the second round, and then ended up going up going to the Jets.

SPEAKER_02

I can't be mad. I feel like the Colts drafted actually pretty pretty well. There were some players that I thought they could have drafted instead, but at the same time, the Colts don't have a great history of drafting the best players uh in their positions.

SPEAKER_01

So I got they did not pass on Pons. He was already drafted by the time.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, so I'm guessing that's who they were probably going after, though.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe, yeah. I I think the Colts did trade down, which uh in that in a way they passed on him, but they did pass on Srat multiple times, including two picks before he got picked. They took a guard from Kentucky. Come on, dude.

SPEAKER_02

He is a big boy, sure, he is he is a big boy, but come on, I mean take the hometown boy. I know, I know. I I I'm with you. I I'm I'm probably the biggest guy on pawns, anyways, or the highest guy on pawns, so I I was upset about it, but you know, can't can't have them all to teach their own, right? So yeah, yeah. The biggest shocker though, besides that, David, was Kalen Black going in the third round. That was an absolute shocker to me. He ends up going to the Niners, but the Niners have drafted, you know, a couple of neon players from last year's team being uh Rourke, and I believe uh CJ West. CJ West, yes. So it's just several different IU players, and they end up and the Jets basically did the same thing. I'll get into it later. But the third round, I was he is a tough runner, body built. We always talk about him being the bigger back, and he was key in big moments, especially when he was able to bring that big body against those big, big defensive tackles against Miami, and you saw it against several other big schools as well in the Big Ten, Ohio State. He he was pretty pivotal pivotal for Indiana football in key moments, David.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, he absolutely was. Um this this was very shocking because if you just look at his stature, he's a shorter guy, very bulky, but he and he he runs hard, but it's not like he's a short yardage back, he's not Jerome Bettis, yeah. And he's not a pass catcher either. So it's not he's not a third down back in that way, like you're not splitting him out every once in a while and yeah, and getting him the ball. So it's definitely he's not your prototypical guy you're gonna take in the NFL draft that high. But the one thing is the 49ers don't really draft like other teams draft. I don't know if you saw there was a graphic out there that, like, based on consensus grades of players and where teams take them, like the value you get. So if a guy's projected to go 100th and you end up getting him in the seventh round at the 220th pick, that's a lot of like overvalue because this guy should have been drafted way higher. Yeah, the 49ers are basically the past few years are basically way over drafting guys, they're reaching essentially. So at the 90th pick, they take a Kalon Black, who the consensus grade on him was like 210 or something. So it's like a major reach. But you know what? The 49ers are pretty good, they've been a very consistent organization. It's almost like maybe they know what they're doing and maybe they're finding fits for their team and for their scheme instead of just drafting based off of what the consensus is. Because the consensus might be right as far as like and it I don't even think it's right, it's probably not right. Consensus is yeah, there's a lot of groupthink that goes on with with draft grades and that stuff, but even if it is right, that doesn't mean that taking the best graded guy is the best fit for your system. And I think they've already got their workhorse running back in McCaffrey, yeah. And Kalon can can you know give him a break every once in a while. He can have like six to eight carries a game, and he's a great pass protector out of the backfield. So he's probably not gonna go out and run a route and catch the ball and pick up some yards. But no, if you put him back there and you have him block for the quarterback, he's a great sixth blocker.

SPEAKER_02

I just man, I was so happy for him when I saw him go in the third round. But yeah, I agree with everything that you said. He's not really a pass catching running back, just more of a he just wants to bang. He just wants a bang down. He does just want to bang. Like, honestly, like he just loves the contact and pushes through. And I could see the Niners using him as basically like almost like a third down back to relieve Caffrey of those physical tackles, like down in the red zone and things like that. I could see.

SPEAKER_01

So the other thing is McCaffrey's been injured a lot lately. Yeah, so yeah, if if he does get injured again, Kalon's not really your guy that you want to give him 20 carries a game.

SPEAKER_02

We both know that. Every Indian.

SPEAKER_01

If you lose McCaffrey, you're losing an MVP caliber player. So yeah, the drop off's gonna be big whether you're you reached for a guy or you didn't reach for a guy, who cares? Yeah, I think he'll be a good fit there.

SPEAKER_02

I do too, I do too, and of course, David, of course, we gotta talk about D'Angelo Pons, him having his own pond at Indiana University. But D'Angelo Pons goes in the second round, uh, pick 50th overall to the Jets, and then just before that, our guy, True Hoosier, through and through Omar Cooper Jr. gets drafted in the first round, pick 30th. They both go to the Jets. I'm ready for the battles on the NFL side that I'll probably see on NFL Network or things like that. But I'm excited for both of these players. What are you most excited for and there as they start their NFL career?

SPEAKER_01

I think it's just opportunity, I think is the most exciting thing. These guys have proven at the college level that they can dominate college competition. D'Angelo Pons may be undersized, but he pound for pound is is one of the best football players in college football this past year.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

He's a lockdown corner. And I I think one of the biggest drawbacks for him, other than his size, is that Indiana played almost exclusively zone. Yeah. I don't know a whole lot about the Jets defensive scheme, but we will see what happens when he when he has to play man-to-man because he barely played that. That is true, but I trust that he can do it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I do too. Who cares?

SPEAKER_01

And and he's he's probably not gonna be the number one corner there, but put him on the number two receiver and let him work. He's gonna he's gonna dominate. Yeah, for Omar, Omar's been through losing, so you know, he's he was here all four years. He knows what losing looks like, and yeah, I think that he he'll be a good culture guy, and and I think he'll end up being they they need a quarterback who can throw him the ball because Geno Smith just isn't the guy. No, he's not the ball. But if they get it, if they get a quarterback next year, I think they could be really good.

SPEAKER_00

I do too in the future.

SPEAKER_01

I know it's the Jets. I think they can be really good. Their first round, their first four picks going David Bailey, who we know is an elite edge rusher.

SPEAKER_02

Shout out, love it, baby.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, dude. The Jets have to be your team. They're Texas Tech and Indiana.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, they have to be your team. I gotta that they they pretty much are my team. I was about to get into that. Yeah, David Paley going number two, wasn't really shocked. Seeing him live against Oklahoma State and just tore them apart. I believe he almost had three. I think he almost had three, I think he had three sacks that game, or three and a half, if I remember. He just took over that game. Oklahoma State was obviously terrible last year, anyway. So, but still hard to get three sacks. Yeah, I was about to say that still really hard to get three sacks, and then just seeing how efficient Omar Cooper Jr. and D'Angelo Ponds are, and it's it to me, it's just like they get better, they're just football guys, and I think you know, the culture that Haynes, Shanahan, and Sig is building is it's just something special. And for being terrible for years, David, I give me another year, like give me give me another year where we're you know trying to win another national champion. So I'm just I'm super excited as an Indiana football fan, not trying to get too excited, but like for what they're building, you know, we have all these great recruits coming. Indiana football's never had this, David. It's so much obviously winning the Natty is huge, but it's just all the momentum, all the you know, former students, students, and I even text you this. I was like, it has to feel what a time to be a student at Indiana Indiana University right now. It's gotta feel something special, has to be incredible. Like, even a loved mind like yourself, David. Like, granted, I've been a fan, a fan which is a good idea.

SPEAKER_01

I told you I told you I wouldn't trade my experience for the world, and that includes the football team being bad, because I I think it it made me a more diehard fan now. Yeah, and yeah, the the students who are there now are probably also diehard fans because it's really, really sick to win every game you go to. But I think going through the losing is part of what makes the the payoff so big, yes, as a fan. And a lot of the students were probably not audio football fans before they got there. I mean, why would they be? Why would they be if they were a freshman three years ago? Um so yeah, I wouldn't have traded it, but it would be sick, dude. It would be sick.

SPEAKER_02

Man, it's it's gotta be a feeling. Of course, David, we can't we can't ignore our guy, our man, the legend, the statue himself, just build it out outside of any university, outside of the rock, just build it next to it. The the reach, our guy, Fernando Mendoza, going number one overall. I don't even know where to start with this guy, you know. I kind of want to name my kid Fernando for crying out loud. Uh but but there's just so much excitement for him and and him starting his NFL career. Obviously, Kirk Cousins will have the reins, I believe, in the beginning, but it's eventually gonna be handed off to him. What are you what is your expectations of Fernando's first couple seasons? I know it's a really broad question, but overall, what are what are you expecting? Because we know what he struggles with.

SPEAKER_01

I'm expecting him to go through some growing pains, yeah, and I don't think he's ever gonna be a top 10 quarterback in the league because he he had he was really good. He wasn't out there slinging it all around. He made the plays when they mattered. It we weren't scoring on every drive. We struggled a lot. He did he took a lot of sacks last year at Cal. He's yeah, we saw it early in the season, he was still kind of hesitant with the line. Obviously, he got better as the season progressed, but now the speed goes up another notch. So adjusting to that, especially I agree, Cousins is probably gonna uh start the season. And if if he doesn't finish it out, I would be surprised because yeah, it doesn't seem like they want to rush Fernando. And I think Cousins is a great mentor to have, and they're not trying to win this year, they're still gonna build over the next couple years, and his like third or fourth year is gonna be when they say, All right, it's go time, yeah. Because that'll be around the time that Genty and Bowers are coming up on free agency, like that's gonna be the window, is is in his like third or fourth year.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, no, I I completely agree with everything you said. I I think he does have potential to be a top 10 if he learns to take a sack. There were times when he would play, he would try to force the issue. That's when he would turn the ball over late.

SPEAKER_01

And should have lost the Penn State interception.

SPEAKER_02

The Penn State interception, also the Iowa game. He's like bad in that take in the fourth. It was bad too. He was bad in that game. People don't care about Oregon, and Oregon. Oregon was also another game where could have very well you know changed the momentum in that game after that pick. So there were certain there were certain points throughout the season where you bring a little pressure on Fernando and he gets a little shaky at times. I mean, that's any great QB, but any great QB likes a clean pocket, but you could tell when you get some pressure on him, he struggled just taking a sack of times. Now, later in the season, he did end up doing that. I would say at the playoffs, he took great care of the ball. So each game he got progressively better. So that's why I'm really interested to see at the NFL level uh his regression regarding that.

SPEAKER_01

To be honest, I think that's really key too. Is is you say each game he got better. I think he was really good at learning from his mistakes. Now he did have those three late game interceptions that he didn't really learn from Oregon, Iowa, Penn State.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Part of I mean, part of that was just close games in high pressure environments, high pressure situations. All those were on the road. Yeah. Yes, high pressure environments, close games in the fourth quarter. So I don't really read a whole lot into that. And like you said, then we get into the the Big Ten title game. We get into the playoff. Yeah, and he was clean the whole time.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, barely any mistakes.

SPEAKER_01

He had the fumble against Oregon that uh Coogan ended up recovering for a first down, which was sick. Yeah, uh but I and I was listening to a podcast, I forget who was talking, it was a draft analyst, and they were talking about how if you watch the film, you can notice him change or if he makes a mistake, you can notice how he fixes that mistake in real time mid-game. And I think that's key is just not making the same mistakes over and over because he's gonna make mistakes. It's the NFL, and he's gonna be young, and yeah, in his first few seasons, he's gonna make mistakes. You just can't let those mistakes compound. And I think he's really good at it at not letting that happen.

SPEAKER_02

I agree with you. I agree with you completely completely on that. I'm gonna go down the other draft picks that we didn't get to talk about real quick. Uh, Riley Noakowski drafted to the Steelers in the fifth round, and of course, Pat Coogan to the Titans in the sixth round, and the leader in the defense from last year, Aiden Fisher goes to the Texans. I hate to see him in the AFC South as a Colts fan, but he goes to the Texans.

SPEAKER_01

I cannot believe he went in the seventh round.

SPEAKER_02

Me either. That was the shocker I was about to get to, too. That that shocked me the most.

SPEAKER_01

I get it because going back to the whole measurables thing, he is not the most explosive guy, but he is Fernando Fernando on defense. Yeah, he's the captain of the defense, he's he's so intelligent, he studies so he knows what's coming. It's why people acted like we were cheating, is because our middle linebacker was so well versed on what the other team was going to do that he knew exactly where the ball was going, what the play was. I I get I understand that the draft is about potential. Yeah, but we get it. This guy, if you if you just get him out there, he's gonna know what to do.

SPEAKER_02

He's gonna figure it out. He might there was very few, I want to say very few errors that I saw him make last season. And you just there was almost like I want to say at least 10 to 20 plays where he knew exactly what was happening. He was he was basically communicating to the D line like hey, he's about to go right there. And it was just amazing to watch in certain moments, and man, I I as a Colts fan, I just hate that he's on the Texans, but congratulations, Aiden Fisher. What a what a what a career you had in college.

SPEAKER_01

And before we move, before we move on to the undrafted free agents. Yes. I saw people on Twitter talking about how we had the one of the best defenses in the country, and we only had two players drafted.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. I mean, you I was getting there, but yeah, I mean that this year's defense coming up this you know next season, David. It's it we're we're still elite. We got we got Haynes at coordinator, we're just cooking.

SPEAKER_01

It just goes to show people are trouble. I would not want to play. It just goes to show how good our coordinator is. I'm not taking anything away from these players, these are great players, and also screw all the people who said our team was all like 25-year-olds. Then we're turning starters on defense. How would we be doing that?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, no, yeah, they can kick rocks on that. I'm with you. But Hanes, man, like I I've texted you many times. Shout out, he follows us, always shows us love, Haynes. Uh, but he's just he's gotta be the best coordinator in college football. He's gotta be. Uh loves.

SPEAKER_01

I love Shanahan, but this guy is just yeah, Haynes did win the award for best coordinator in college football last year. I mean, I know I think everybody agrees. I just I don't know how you argue it. Like, this this game, there's no arguing it.

SPEAKER_02

Like, I I could go on and on about Haynes, but I mean every game I usually text you. Yeah, great call by Haynes. It's already seeing it.

SPEAKER_01

He's yeah, he knows what he's doing.

SPEAKER_02

That man is the whole Ty Simpson thing. I mean, I love my guy Haynes, but I feel like that got twisted a little bit. Like Simpson was complimenting Haynes, very much complimenting Haynes.

SPEAKER_01

All he was saying is when he said they do the same thing on every play, he was saying he was saying they play zone, which is true. We play zone on every play. Yeah, yeah, I was gonna say, like that got blown out of the porch for no reason at all. Yeah, but love you, Haynes. He just yeah, he was just complimenting, he was like, they know exactly where to be at all times. That just means they're very well coached. Yeah, it was a compliment, it was definitely a great compliment.

SPEAKER_02

And then some of the uh sign free agent deals from last year. Obviously, uh Kamara got drafted, or not drafted, uh signed by the Niners. Ej Williams went to the Raiders, got signed, MB got signed to the Raiders as well. We're just stacking up by players on the Raiders as well. Uh Boykin went uh safety to the Steelers as well, off got signed. Our long snapper Langston to the Bills got signed, and then uh our guy Moore sealed the national championship safety, Miami Dolphins. No, he didn't, no he didn't at all. He didn't? No, that was Jamari Sharp.

SPEAKER_00

And he's back.

SPEAKER_02

He is back, man. Oh well, botched that. Not editing that either, but messed that up, anyways. I don't care. Uh Brady, Jonathan Brady, wide receiver, got a camp invite from the Raiders. Huge. Our guy Mitch McCarthy, punter, New England Patriots, got an invite as well. And Khalil Benson, OT, got an invite from the Chiefs. He's gonna be sent home so quick.

SPEAKER_00

I hope not. Khalil to make it. Come on, dude, Khalil. It's time to hang it up, brother. I know. It's time. He did he did everything right for us, though. Yeah, except he barely played because he wasn't good enough.

SPEAKER_01

I know. Got replaced so many times at right tackle. But hey, you know, what a crop of guys. How can you not love these guys? Such a great group of guys, David. Such a great group of guys. And I'm like most of those undrafted free agents have a chance to make the team. I do too. I do too. Like the mini camp guys, probably not because it's minicamp. Yeah. But the undraft guys like Kamara's gonna Kamara's gonna play in the NFL. Yeah. Roman Hemby should have been drafted.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, he should have been drafted. I agree with that. I was shocked that he didn't. I was absolutely shocked that he didn't.

SPEAKER_01

Like, I was a I I liked Kalon a lot more than uh Hemby. We both did. We both didn't know. Just a much tougher runner, yeah. His built, his built different, like yeah, for sure. Hemby's a lot taller and a little more slender, but Henby's still an NFL guy.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah. No, I agree. I think everyone that knows Indiana football would agree with you on that. I'd be shocked if they didn't, but you know, I'm gonna touch on the spring game real quick, David. Real, real, real, real quick. Uh Hoover threw for 94 yards, six to 13. Our defense looks to be uh helping him grow, needs a lot of growth in this offseason. Yeah, not not the best performance, but hey, uh Fernando didn't obviously have the best performance early in the season either. Tyler Cherry, five of six for 33, and then Wilson threw three of four, 84 yards, and a tutty. You know what stood out most to me, David, when I was going through stats real quick. Shout out to the Daily Hoosier. Daily Tyler Morris had five receptions, 115 yards and a tutty. That's that's some pretty good stats for a spring game. That's good productivity, as Sig would say.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it was great, and he's gonna be really good in the slot, but yeah, it was a slot. Yeah, touchdown was um the most busted coverage of all time by the by the second team defense.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, yeah, true, true, true. But you can't read too much into things, you know. Turbo Richard 2, talk about Robin Hemby.

SPEAKER_01

He's another version, the other version of the are not similar at all. I think they're similar. They just both have dreads.

SPEAKER_00

No, no, they're not even close to the same size.

SPEAKER_02

I know. I'm I'm I'm I'm messing with you, but they do look very similar just as a person. So that's very yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I was shocked Turbo got so many carries. Yeah, I mean, I know like he's he he's gonna split time with both uh Kobe Martin and Lee B once he comes back, but still and then what do you think about Hoover? What do we think about Hoover's accuracy?

SPEAKER_02

I'm worried about it, if I'm honest. I'm worried about it. I think that's where Fernando was so spot on. I think his accuracy was absolutely insane at times. Some of the balls that he threw. He also underthrew some deep balls at times, but I would say Hoover could throw the ball farther than Fernando. That might be a hot take, but I think he has a better deep ball arm than Fernando. I think Josh does. But I think he's got to be able to make those 10 to 15 yard passes like spot on. Like it's gotta be on target. And you like Fernando was so good at that, so it's gonna be shaky, David. I think it's gonna be shaky. I think you'll see a very similar comparison to how Fernando was in the first game. I don't expect Josh Huber to have a great first couple games, I'll be honest. I I don't.

SPEAKER_01

I don't I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. Okay, I don't know. I think he'll be I think he will be fine. I think he will be fine.

SPEAKER_00

Maybe you know, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know, but I think he will be fine. Okay, okay. The accuracy wasn't awful. He was trying to fit some balls into really tight windows, so I think uh my bigger issue might be decision making, which we know he was a little more turnover prone coming in, anyways. So we know that's already a concern. I think that'll get coached out of him. I also think that the defense knows what's coming, like they practice against each other every day, so it's really hard to tell in the spring game. Also, no Charlie Becker, which he's gonna be a first-round pick next year.

SPEAKER_02

So will Nick Marsh. So it's and so will Nick Marsh.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but not having a guy like Charlie out there obviously changes the way the offense would look. Yeah, so I'm not worried. I think he'll be fine. I don't know.

Yeah, I I really don't know either. I can't wait to find out. I'm really excited. You know, we've got a few months, you know, a few more months of the the dead period, I call it. But we appreciate you guys tuning in, listening, watching, wherever you're at, hopefully Indiana. But if you're not, you know, I'm probably one of the lone Indiana fans here in Lubbock, Texas. So we appreciate you guys' support. Go to our Instagram, x5LF Podcast, show us some love, and also TikTok 5LF Podcast. Give us a follow, give us a comment, engage with us. We always love hearing from you guys, and also give us a five-star rating on Spotify. We will see you in the next one. Peace.
